This article examines the Goldenes Rössl, a lavish devotional statuette that Queen Isabeau of Bavaria gifted to Charles VI of France in 1405. While previous scholarship has primarily analysed the piece as a votive object in the context of courtly gift exchange and devotional practice, this study argues that its innovative iconography – specifically the portrait of Charles VI accompanied by secular attendants – functioned, among others, as a mnemonic aid. Drawing on contemporary theories of memory (ars memoriae), I propose that the statuette was designed to assist the king, whose recurring bouts of mental illness were linked to impairments in memory and recognition. The analysis integrates art historical methodologies with textual sources, including royal inventories, chronicles, and Pierre Salmon’s Les Demandes et Réponses au Roi Charles VI, to contextualize the visual programme within late medieval cognitive and emotional frameworks. The article ultimately challenges the conventional view of devotional portraits as mere displays of status and religiosity, designed to encourage prayer and contemplation. It proposes that such works were also conceived as active tools, stimulating the cognitive and emotional faculties of the viewer.
