This paper draws attention to an understudied sheet that has been assigned to a Bolognese pupil of Raphael, Tommaso Vincidor. The attribution is refuted here, the paper demonstrating that the work should rather be associated with a much-debated group of drawings, mostly attributed to Giovanni Francesco Penni or to Raphael himself. An iconographic analysis suggests it depicts an unusual mythological episode, the amorous encounter between Bacchus and Althaea, mentioned only in Hyginus’s Fabulae. Given the subject – which eruditely combines love and the origins of vine cultivation – and considering the evidence of an early presence in Ferrara, it is suggested that the sheet was commissioned by Duke Alfonso I d’Este, as a model for a painting intended for the ‘Camerino delle pitture’.
