LISANDRA ESTEVEZ - Performative Polychromy in Juan de Valdés Leal’s Pietà (pp. 137–148)

This article examines the interrelatedness of painting and sculpture in Juan de Valdés Leal’s Pietà (c. 1657–1660, oil on canvas, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art). It compares the painting with examples of polychrome sculpture, religious tracts, ritual performances, and theater that include pasos and auto-sacramental plays to interpret the affective power of this sorrowful image. By evaluating this canvas’s dramatic and emotional subject with an intermedial approach, this text also considers the message and meaning of the Pietà narrative in the visual culture of early modern Seville.
