MARILYN ARONBERG LAVIN - A Bernini Caricature of a Hunchback Dwarf (pp. 257–266)

This analysis examines a rare original caricature by Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598–1680), depicting a hunchback dwarf holding two ambiguous objects. The drawing’s interpretation has sparked scholarly debate regarding whether the objects represent liturgical instruments (aspergillum and aspersorium) or secular items (wine glass and money bag). Through examination of historical, religious, and artistic contexts, the author proposes that Bernini deliberately created a dual interpretation, combining religious ritual with social commentary. The study identifies the likely subject as ‘Il Nano di Créqui’, a prominent dwarf in the entourage of a French ambassador during his 1633–1634 Rome embassy. The caricature appears to be Bernini’s ironic commentary on both French diplomatic pretensions and clerical worldliness, demonstrating his ability to capture complex social and political dynamics in an unusual, and seemingly simple sketch.
