NORMAN E. LAND - On the Poetry of Giovanni Bellini's Sacred Allegory

The article deals with meaning in Giovanni Bellini's so-called Sacred Allegory in the Gallerie degli Uffizi, Florence. Previous attempts at explaining meaning in the painting have been iconographical and have largely ignored the meaning and poetry of its form, hence distorting the picture's value. The author's descriptive evocation of poetry in Bellini's work demonstrates that its form and its meaning are inseparable. Attention is also given to previous criticism, other than iconographical, of Bellini's work.
